Arutanga Harbour Upgrade

Aitutaki · Southern Group · maritime · 2022 onward

Improving the passage used for essential cargo while creating safer access for local boats, fishing, yachts, and tourism.

Aitutaki receives food, fuel, and other necessities through Arutanga Port. Historically, larger cargo vessels remained outside the reef while freight was transferred by barge, sometimes in rough conditions. The wider programme has included a new crane marking the completion of Phase 1, harbour-basin and port improvements, Phase 2 dredging, a planned channel approximately 980 metres long, 15 metres wide and five metres deep, new waterfront and hardstand improvements, and a new jetty supporting cruise tenders and local operators.
