The Cook Islands Party (CIP) government MPs have chipped in to support the 2018 Te Maeva Nui celebrations tere parties.
Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown and some Cabinet ministers on Tuesday visited all of the hostels where the outer island groups are billeted, handing out food items.
Brown said they were pleased to help the tere parties on Rarotonga participate in the annual cultural event.
“I’m really happy with our contributions to all of our tere parties that arrived from the outer islands and as we usually do, the government members always make a contribution and pile up some food parcels to help out the outer islands,” he said.
“This year we delivered 15 cartons of chicken to all of the tere parties and also to all of the dance teams that are based here. All of the MPs from the government side were part of this contribution and we are very happy to help out just in a small way to the islands that have made the effort to come to Rarotonga, and also to all the teams here on Rarotonga.”
Brown said Te Maeva Nui was an important event for the country and the government was pleased to be able to bring people from the Pa Enua together to be part of the celebration.
“It’s part of our sovereignty, our independence as people and it’s really good to be able to get the people to Rarotonga, once every two or three years, to celebrate.
“The level of competition, dance and culture exhibited each year just gets better and better. We are looking forward to a fantastic Maeva Nui this year and we’re also looking forward to everyone having a good time.”
